In the heart of Pune, Maharashtra, a remarkable transformation is taking place. Trupti Bhushan Dhakate, a gold medalist in Botany from Nagpur University and former microbiology professor, has transitioned from academia to agriculture, establishing herself as a leading mushroom farming entrepreneur.

In 2018, driven by a passion for sustainable farming and a desire to repurpose agricultural waste, Trupti founded Quality mushroom Farm. Her venture focuses on cultivating oyster and milky varieties using 100% organic methods, eschewing chemical pesticides and fertilizers in favor of natural alternatives to maintain soil health. Trupti’s innovative approach not only addresses environmental concerns but also provides economic opportunities for local farmers.

By converting agricultural waste into valuable venture, she helps reduce pollution caused by waste burning and offers farmers a nutritious, high-demand product to diversify their income. Under her leadership, Quality Mushroom Farm has achieved significant milestones. The enterprise boasts a daily output of 50 kg of mushrooms and generates a monthly turnover of approximately ₹4 lakh. Beyond production, Trupti is dedicated to education, having trained over 7,124 students in mushroom cultivation, empowering many to become successful growers themselves.

Trupti’s journey from professor to entrepreneur has not been without challenges. Initially, she faced skepticism from her family and the community, who questioned her decision to leave a prestigious academic career. Undeterred, she invested ₹3 lakh, with support from her husband, to establish the farm. Her commitment to educating the public about the nutritional value of mushrooms and dispelling misconceptions has been instrumental in the farm’s success.

Today, Quality Mushroom Farm is recognized for its premium produce and sustainable practices. The farm offers a range of mushroom-based products, including fresh and dried mushrooms, as well as value-added items like mushroom powder and extracts. Trupti’s efforts have not only contributed to environmental conservation but have also empowered women and marginalized communities by providing training and resources for mushroom cultivation.

Trupti’s inspiring story has garnered national attention, with features in various publications highlighting her contributions to sustainable agriculture and entrepreneurship. Her success serves as a testament to the potential of combining academic knowledge with practical application, paving the way for innovative solutions in farming and environmental conservation.
