Pioneering Research and Developments in Horticulture
ICAR-IIHR has developed a groundbreaking calcium-enrichment technology for elm oyster mushrooms (Hypsizygus ulmarius). The vacuum impregnation process under high pressure has resulted in a 202.27% increase in calcium concentration compared to conventional mushrooms, addressing global dietary calcium deficiency.
Additionally, ICAR-IIHR is leading the ‘Genome Editing’ project, working on 16 varieties of vegetables, fruits, and spices to develop nutrient-rich and climate-resilient crops. Key developments include:
- Vitamin D-enriched golden yellow tomatoes.
- Disease-resistant varieties of papaya, chili, grape, and pomegranate.
- High-yield, climate-resilient horticultural crops.
This initiative marks a shift towards sustainable, high-nutrition, and resilient crop development for the future.
