Empowering Women Entrepreneurs: Odisha’s Sujata Agarwal Revolutionizes Saffron Cultivation
In the heart of Jharsuguda, Odisha, Sujata Agarwal has transformed a modest 100-square-foot room into a thriving saffron farm, earning an impressive ₹24 lakh annually. Her innovative approach to indoor saffron cultivation not only challenges traditional farming methods but also empowers women entrepreneurs across India.

The Genesis of an Entrepreneurial Journey
In 2022, while using saffron during her daily prayers, Sujata pondered its cultivation and pricing. Intrigued by the idea of growing this precious spice, she embarked on extensive research. Discovering the potential of indoor saffron farming, she shared her vision with her husband, who supported her decision to venture into this uncharted territory.
Innovative Indoor Saffron Farming
Sujata’s venture, “Bloom in Hydro,” utilizes aeroponic techniques to cultivate saffron indoors. By creating a controlled environment with chillers and racks, she replicates the climatic conditions of Kashmir, the traditional saffron-growing region. This method allows for two harvests annually, with each yielding approximately 450 grams, totaling around 900 grams per year. At a market price of ₹10 lakh per kilogram, her annual revenue from saffron alone amounts to ₹9 lakh.
Diversification and Value Addition
Beyond saffron, Sujata capitalizes on the entire saffron plant. She processes the petals into ‘kahwa’ tea masala and a hair and skin serum. The serum, priced at ₹400 per 30 ml bottle, has a shelf life of 1.5 months. With a monthly sale of approximately 270 bottles, she earns around ₹1.19 lakh monthly. Additionally, the ‘kahwa’ tea masala, sold at ₹2,500 per kilogram, contributes an extra ₹13,000 monthly. This diversification brings her total annual income to ₹24 lakh.
Empowering the Community
Sujata’s success story extends beyond personal achievement. She trains individuals in saffron farming, promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Her initiative has inspired many, including women in rural areas, to explore indoor farming as a viable livelihood option.
A Model for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
Sujata’s journey exemplifies how innovation and determination can lead to remarkable success. Her story serves as an inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs, especially women, to explore unconventional avenues and contribute to the agricultural sector’s growth.
